Benefact Article – April/May 2018

Two months seems to go faster and faster and another newsletter is due. What mixed weather we have been having and as I write this it is once more trying to snow and then blue skies. Roll on Spring!

It has been a little quieter recently but we had a successful Christingle service in February and raised £125.68 for “The Children’s Society”. A very worthwhile charity that cares for children worldwide.

We finally managed to hold Messy Church on 17th March in the Village Hall with a theme around Easter, the cross and forgiveness. Everyone had a really good time and completed some great crafts. A real favourite was the Easter Garden in a Jam Jar. Lovely to take home and display over Easter. It was good to see some new families and we hope to welcome more at our next session on 12th May 2018. We finished off with good old fish fingers and chips!

Services to look forward to are our usual Easter Services with Maundy Thursday Evening, Good Friday Devotion at 12.00 and Easter Day Communion at 10.30am. But before that, we have the Palm Sunday Service on 25th March with Blessing of Palm Crosses at Hadnall at 10.30am, walk to Astley and then Holy Communion at Astley around 11.15am.

Then on 20th May, the W.I will be arranging a “Songs of Praise” instead of our usual Evening Prayer and that will be at 4.00pm. This in place of the cancelled Carol Service in December.

Do come and join in our services. Hopefully we can get back to the normal service pattern after Paul has been licensed in June. If you haven’t already heard this will take place on Saturday 9th June in Hadnall at 6.00pm. Bishop Michael will be officiating. Let us give Paul a big welcome.

Another date for your diaries is 11th April at 7.00pm when the Church APCM will take place in the church. This is the opportunity for you to come and have your say and hear what is going on. The Rural Dean Rev Adam Clayton will be in the chair.

I apologise for the delay in sorting out the Thursday Coffee Mornings and for the lack in March. February took place in “Cherry Trees” with Anna and Chris with a good choice of cakes etc. The next one will be on 19th April with Diane Clarke at 10.30. May will be on 17th and our hostess will be Margaret Williams at Plas Bach, Hall Drive. June is on 21st at Astley Lodge with Eric and Judi. These are very friendly gatherings meant for anyone and there is no charge or donations. Just come and enjoy friendly natters and lovely cakes and coffee (or tea)

I nearly forgot to include our forthcoming “Pet Service” in the church on Sunday 8th April at 10.30am. This will in place of our normal Family Service. So gather up those pets and come and join us. This will be followed by refreshments in church.

Thanks are extended to Lesley for hosting Pancake night at her home, she must have made 200 pancakes some with savoury filling some with sweet fillings and all equally delicious! Donations amounted to £50 which was a real bonus.

A ‘super’ thanks to all who attended our recent Souper Soups and Savouries evening, there was a real buzz about the evening and we raised £330 for church funds.

By the time this is printed we will have held our Easter Bingo and hopefully it will have been as successful as the previous ones.

On Sunday 1st April we are holding a Quiz night by kind invitation of The New Inn, starting at 8.00pm, up to teams of four, £5 a team, entries on the night.

The next Saturday Coffee Morning will be 7th April, 10.30 am – 12 noon. These mornings are becoming more popular with the March one having the largest attendance yet. ( besides December when we also have Hand Bell Ringers). The following one are on 5th May and 2nd of June. Everyone is most welcome there is no charge but a donation will be appreciated.

Our AGM will be held in church on Wednesday, 11th April at 7pm. All very welcome.

Looking further ahead, we will be holding our Pimms and Puds on Friday 29th of June and it is time to start thinking about a Scarecrow entry for the Scarecrow Weekend on 8/9th September, theme is ‘Anything Goes’
